Your choice
You can read the blog without accepting optional cookies. Use Privacy & cookie settings at the bottom of any page to review your options or withdraw consent. Google’s consent message offers Consent, Do not consent and Manage options, including information about purposes and partners. Opening the settings pauses this blog’s analytics and article ads while you reconsider. Changing your decision may reload the page.
Google Analytics loads only after the consent service reports consent for analytics storage. Ads also require advertising consent and the site’s advertising switch to be enabled. Unknown choices, missing consent signals or a blocked consent service do not enable either feature. We do not send cookieless Analytics measurements when you decline. Labelled ad placements appear after articles and the About text, below the book promotion on articles, About and the article feed, and at the bottom of the article feed after pagination. Search results, category archives and this privacy page do not contain ad placements.
Why information is used
- Consent management: Google’s consent service remembers and communicates your choices. Loading the service sends Google your IP address and normal browser request information so it can deliver the appropriate message. This is separate from loading Analytics or requesting an article ad.
- Optional statistics: Google Analytics measures visits, article views and interactions using browser identifiers and information about your device and page use. These identifiers are not anonymous. This blog disables Google Signals and advertising personalisation signals in its Analytics configuration.
- Optional advertising: when enabled and permitted by your choices, Google AdSense and the partners identified in the consent message deliver and measure ads, limit repetition and help detect invalid traffic. Personalised advertising depends on your choices; non-personalised advertising can still use cookies and does not automatically mean that no consent is needed.
- Site operation: the hosting provider processes connection information such as IP addresses and requested URLs to deliver and protect the site. Administrator login and comment functions may also use information you explicitly provide.
Cookies and similar storage
- FCCDCF and FCNEC: Google’s consent-management cookies remember consent information and message-related state. Their actual expiry can be inspected in your browser; deleting them may cause the message to appear again.
- _ga and _ga_HDREH87L2M: optional Google Analytics identifiers, configured here for up to six months without renewal on every visit.
- __gads and __gpi: Google advertising cookies that may be set when ads are enabled and your choices permit them. Google documents a maximum lifetime of 13 months. Other Google or partner storage may depend on the ad served and your choices; the consent message provides the current partner information.
- WordPress login cookies: used for administrator sign-in rather than ordinary reading. Lifetime depends on the login session and Remember Me.
- comment_author_*, comment_author_email_* and comment_author_url_*: WordPress may remember comment details if you select that option, normally for up to one year.
Previous CookiePro/OneTrust choices are not carried over as consent to advertising. Browser cookie lifetimes are not the same as retention of data already collected by service providers. Browsers may shorten storage lifetimes.
Providers, transfers and your rights
Google and the advertising partners you authorise may process information outside the EU/EEA. Read Google’s privacy policy, how Google uses information from partner sites and Google’s cookie information. Current advertising partners and their purposes are listed in Manage options in the consent message. External bookshop links take you to other websites, whose policies apply there.
You may withdraw optional consent at any time. Withdrawal stops future collection by this blog’s optional integrations and removes accessible Analytics cookies; it does not undo processing that occurred before withdrawal or automatically delete information held by providers. You can also clear cookies in your browser. Contact us to exercise applicable rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection or portability. You may lodge a complaint with Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY).
